- Interventional cardiology:
- Coronary angiography is done by Dr. Joy Thomas through the radial route in almost all of his cases and where angioplasty is to be done in the same sitting it is done through the radial route. This is comfortable for the patient as the patient can walk about soon after the procedure and reduces bleeding complications and formation of hematomas.
- Dr. Joy Thomas had training under Dr. Gerald Dorros of St. Lukes Hospital New York, U.S.A., Dr. Michel Henri and Dr Alain Cribier of France during their visit to India and learnt the skills from the finest exponents of peripheral intervention in the world.
- Balloon Valvuloplasty:
- Dr. Joy Thomas has done more than a 1500 balloon valvuloplasty including balloon mitral valvuloplasty besides aortic, pulmonary and tricuspid valvuloplasties.
- Device closure of defects (holes) in the heart:
- Holes in the heart were traditionally repaired by surgery but devices are currently available for closure of most defects (holes) in the heart. Dr. Joy Thomas has closed defects in the atrial septum (ASD) Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) and dilated coarctation of the aorta and implanted IVC filters for recurrent pulmonary embolism.
- Trans - Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR):
- Dr Joy Thomas with Dr.Prashanth Vaithiyanath (Cardiac Surgeon) did Trans-Apical Aortic valve Replacement in January 2010. Presently he does the non-surgical TAVR at the Frontier Lifeline Hospital.
- Radiofrequency ablation of arrhythmias:
- Ever since the first radiofrequency ablation was done by Drs. Balaji Sheshadri, Anwar Dhala and Joy Thomas in January 1997 under the leadership of Dr KA Abraham at the Railway Hospital, Perambur, Dr. Joy has done more than 1500 radio frequency ablations. He attends international workshops in USA and Europe for periodic update of his professional skills by attending sabatticals at Lahey Clinic, Burlington,MA, USA, Van Geffen Hospital, UCLA at Los Angles, UCLA, San Francisco and the complex ablation course at Chicago in 2005. He has advanced into tackling complex arrhythmias like atrial fibrilllation and ventricular tachycardia. He has excellent experience in pacemaker implantation and in device therapy for prevention of sudden cardiac arrest (Automatic Implantable Cardio verter Defibrillator- AICD) and Bi-Venticular pacemaker for heart failure.
- Radiofrequency treatment of resistant High Blood Pressure
- More recently he has pioneered the use of radiofrequency ablation for treatment of resistant Hyper-Tension/Uncontrolled Blood Pressure.
- Clinical Trials
- Dr Joy Thomas has been and is the Principal Investigator in several International Clinical Trials.
